Coral Reefs

1. ICRI - International Coral Reef Initiative

The International Coral Reef Initiative is a partnership among nations and organizations seeking to implement Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, and other international conventions and agreements, for the benefit of coral reefs and related ecosystems. The ICRI focuses on the plight of the reefs and the actions necessary to reverse the trends toward their degradation. This site provides pertinent information to those particularly interested in coral reef management. Background information is provided about reefs in general, as well as the initiative and its partners. Regional workshop summaries and complete workshop reports are also available.

2. WWF-Coral Reefs and Climate Change

WWF leads international efforts to protect the diversity of life on Earth. The WWF Climate Change Campaign is working in over 25 countries to raise awareness of the threats of climate change to wildlife and natural ecosystems such as coral reefs, pressure governments into taking action to prevent climate change, and to build partnerships with business and industry to find solutions to the problem. This section of the WWF website presents an issue summary of coral reefs and climate change. The summary includes the following topics: an overview of issues; the collapse of a unique global ecosystem; an extraordinary global resource; the threat from climate change; death by bleaching; warming oceans; and solutions.

3. ReefBase - Global Database on Coral Reefs

ReefBase is a database on coral reefs and their resources. It aims to make reef information available to a wide audience to promote awareness and informed management of coral reef systems through user friendly software on a CD-ROM. ReefBase has been created for scientists, academicians, students, resource managers in government and private institutions, divers and other coral reef enthusiasts and is part of a research effort to develop criteria for assessing coral reef health, at national, regional and global scales. It is the official database of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, and directly addresses priority actions of the International Coral Reef Initiative, now endorsed by 75 governments.

4. GCRMN - Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network

The GCRMN has been established to address the problems that continue to increasingly affect and threaten coral reefs around the world, and to provide valid management data.  The extent of damage to coral reffs cannot be precisely determined because of the special difficulties of monitoring underwater. Thus, there is a need to assess how, where and why damage is occurring and determine the best methods for prevention. By harnessing the interest and skills of all users in reef assessment and management,  the GCRMN will be able to facilitate networks of people trained to look closely at coral reefs and to monitor their progress over time. This will also provide knowledge and data on reef status and trends.

5. World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) - Marine

This section of the WCPA website includes a brief summary of key issues in marine protected areas, a description of the WCPA-Marine Program, recent news on the marine theme, a list of upcoming events, marine theme personnel, reports and publications, and related websites.

6. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

The goal of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is to provide for the protection, wise use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef in perpetuity through the care and development of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This site provides extensive information about the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and its management. This site contains a great deal of information relevant for those interested in reefs and their management.

7. COREMAP - Coral Reef Rehabiltation and Management Program

A World Bank-supported national program, COREMAP aims for the protection, rehabilitation and renewable use of coral reefs and associated ecosystems in Indonesia, which would in turn enhance the welfare of coastal communities. The program's development objective is to establish viable, operational, and institutionalized coral reef management systems in priority coral reef sites in Indonesia.

8. Reefs at Risk: A Map-Based Indicator of Threats to the World's Coral Reefs

This site provides a report on a collaborative initiative implemented by the World Resources Institute (WRI), the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM), the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the first global assessment of coral reefs to map areas at risk from overfishing, coastal development, and other human activity.
